Old Montfort Castle Ruin
Ruin
Ruins of a hilltop castle built by Hugh I.
6833 Weiler
Austria
On a hill near Weiler rises the ruined castle of Alt-Montfort, which was already mentioned in 1206. Hugo I gave it the name "Montfort". This means as much as "strong mountain", "strong castle". He also calls himself that from that time on. In 1405, Old Montfort was destroyed in the Appenzell War. Since then, only ruins remain. According to a legend, a large black pig roams the area at night. This is the punishment for the immoral behavior of a castle inhabitant. The ghost pig has also been sighted in the village in the early morning hours. Do not be surprised when the black pig crosses your path.
