The Vorarlberg Military Museum originated in the history room at the Bilgeri Barracks in the town of Bregenz. On 17 July 1979 a “Vorarlberg Military History Collection” was established there by Colonel Erwin Schaffer. This Vorarlberg Military History Collection formed the basis for the 250 square meter Military Museum exhibitions on three floors of the Bregenz Martinsturm (St. Martin’s Tower) in Bregenz. The museum has been open to the public since 1986.

In 2010 the collection was moved back to the Colonel Bilgeri Military Headquarters (the former Bilgeri Barracks). The newly conceived and organized exhibits detailing the history of military defense in Vorarlberg and the Lake of Constance region were completed and opened to the public in June 2017. The museum can be visited with prior reservations, or for special events such as “Destination Museum” and “The Long Night of the Museums”.
